1st Generation Farmer Conference

1st Gen Farmer Conference- Rosy Farms

Are you a 1st generation farmer looking to connect with a strong community of friends and mentors? Do you want to make your farm business more resilient by improving your financial plan and communication strategies? Are you a city-slicker itching to get your boots on land but don’t know where to start?

Join us at the 1st Generation Farmer Conference to get relevant, ready-to-apply farm knowledge from a fantastic line up of speakers and to meet other passionate farmers in Alberta!

When: Saturday, August 10, 2019

Where: Rosy Farms (about 1h NW of Edmonton, AB). Lots of parking and camping space available on-site.

Cost: $50/person includes conference attendance and a delicious, locally-sourced lunch (prepare your taste buds for a charcuterie style feast!). All proceeds will be going to the Young Agrarians as they continue to support and cultivate the dreams and aspirations of new farmers

6 reasons why you should attend 1st Gen Farmers Conference.

  1. We focus on the how rather than the what. Yes, theory is important, but we know you’re more concerned with why and how other marketers are making it happen rather than the less-relatable theory.

  2. Everyone is Welcome. City slicker or hardcore farmer.  The talks are information jam packed. The conference focuses on networking and learn fresh new ideas. Agriculture can me more then cattle and combines.

  3. Full circle support. A business is more than your product. Learn about lending strategies, what your country can do for you and big city business support. We make sure that your not alone.

  4. New City experiences moving into the county. Every owner speaking has come from the City. According to a Young Agrarians study, 68% of new farmers have no farming background. Lets build those numbers.

  5. The Grub or The Food Fair. We have assembled many of Edmonton's best vendors. They have chopped, smashed, mixed, baked and cooked up lunch for you. A charcuterie style lunch, so brace your mind and your taste buds for the day.

  6. All proceeds will be going to the Young Agrarians.  Helping to support young farmers, to grow their dreams.

Farm Bios

Rosy Farms –

We are a  haskap centrec farm; permaculture run, monoculture focused.  Andrew is a city slicker turned haskap fruit farmer and has built his dream while developing a new industry. Expect to learn from his experiences, how to build your tribe of mentors, operation scales, potential markets, what it takes to farm, rigors of planning, and of course the power of haskap fruit.

Greener Pastures Ranching –

We are a regenerative ranching operation that does not own cattle and does not own the land that we run the cattle on. Through rotational grazing we protect our riparian areas, regenerate our pastures and preserve wildlife habitat, all while increasing soil biodiversity. We run approximately 1200 head of cattle each summer on approximately 3000 acres of leased land. We also direct market pastured pork into nearby Edmonton and promote regenerative agricultural practices throughout North America through magazine articles, and public speaking events.

Swiss Leaf Farms -

We are growing leafy greens year round using 90% less water, zero pesticides with a patented growing system that was  developed in Canada.  Every week we are shipping 12,000 heads of lettuce to over 100 retail locations.  People will be able to see each stage of growth from seed to harvest ready plants, how we prepare irrigation nutrients, how we harvest and our unique packaging that increases shelf life.

Presentation- Commonwealth Agriculture Conference

Rosy Farms owner, Andrew, has the honor to speak at this conference, where it is only the 4th time it has been held in Canada. Speaking on a panel of 3 about how young entrepreneurs are taking over agriculture, called: Bees, Berries & Beer. Andrew will be presenting for 20 minuets on how he started a farm from nothing, city sicker to farmer, what new opportunities are open to young farmers and how new crops are expanding our agriculture diversity.

It is going to be a conference to remember. For more information: Commonwealth Agriculture Conference

Conference Bio:

Andrew, a city slicker turned haskap fruit farmer, has built his dream and is developing a new industry, founder of the Haskap Alberta Association and a founding shareholder of North 49 Fruit Corp- sales/marketing of Canadian fruit.

Born and raised in Edmonton, Andrew achieved a diploma in Production Horticulture at Olds College, AB, before entering the trades, now working as a Suncor Execution Coordinator. All his profits seed into the expense of starting a haskap farm from scratch, buying 76 acres in Alcomdale, AB, planting a 26 acre orchard, and currently planning a small processing center.

Large commodity farms have opened up opportunities for specialty growers, aided by the ease of social media and the support of the Alberta Government, creating market diversify with the hopes of long-term sustainability.

Customers want connections: connection to their food, the land, and the people growing. Andrew is building this connection because he strongly believes in haskap fruit, in the power of local, and is driven to prove that the small family farm is alive and growing.
